Northern Lights are a rare phenomenon in Central Europe and are caused by charged particles colliding with gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere. They are the result of strong eruptions of the sun and can be viewed in clear nights, ideally from the top of a high mountain with unobstructed view towards the North such as the Säntis.
