VR Drive Metric - sample images ready

On September 16, 2014, the Seitz team presented the new Roundshot VR Drive Metric to the public for the first time at Photokina in Cologne. We have used the last two months to perfect the hardware and stitching software. The goal was to speed up the image capture and stitching process as well as to enable maximum precision of the stitching process.

At the same time, we intensively tested the new device in use and created an initial series of sample images, which are now available on our website.

  • Hardware improvements from prototype to series model:
    • Comprehensive lens testing to achieve the best possible image quality
    • Stabilize the lens with the VR Drive to eliminate the effect of vibration and ensure long-term system stability
    • Integration of a wifi router in the Metric housing
    • Many small hardware improvements
  • Improved system calibration
  • Reduction in the number of images taken for the 194 million sphere
    • Prototype: 29 images
    • First series: 15 images
  • More efficient image distribution has significantly reduced capture and processing times.
    Some examples:
    • Normal mode (non-HDR): Prototype: 58 seconds - reduced to 36 seconds
    • HDR with Bracketing 3 - Prototype: 1 minute 56 seconds - reduced to 1 minute 10 seconds
  • Expansion of the PanoMaker stitching software with adaptive algorithms for point detection as well as many performance improvements

As a direct result of our operational tests, we have provided VR Drive Metric sample images for you.

These 180x360° spheres were all captured with the Roundshot VR Drive Metric and stitched together using PanoMaker software.

Specifications:

  • Image captured by Roundshot VR Drive Metric with Canon EOS 6D camera and 20mm lens
  • 32-bit HDR images (3x15 images) calculated in PanoMaker software and saved as jpeg images with tonal value correction
  • 9,856 x 19,712 pixels = 194.3 million pixels
  • no image post-processing (no sharpening of the images and no color corrections)
